"When my husband and I were looking for a church to join, we were looking for one that had members of all ages, a friendly congregation, and a relaxed atmosphere in which we could worship without any pressure of attending every week or dressing a certain way.  Emanuel is exactly what we were looking for!"

Church History

On August 28, 1866, twenty-six men of German descent met to form a German Protestant Church in Lawrenceburg .  That day the congregation was officially organized, and a building committee was formed. A church building was erected and dedicated on August 22, 1869, at the corner of Main and Fourth Streets, in Lawrenceburg.

The congregation began and operated as an Independent Lutheran Church until 1921, when it joined the Indiana Synod of the United Lutheran Church in America. At that time, the Church received it’s current name of Emanuel Lutheran Church. After a series of mergers of Lutheran Churches in North America, the United Lutheran Church in America became a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The congregation is now identified as part of the Indiana-Kentucky Synod of the ELCA.

The congregation worshipped for 84 years at their Church on Main Street in Lawrenceburg, from 1869 till 1953. During the devastating floods of 1937, the Church Building suffered extensive damage, but the congregation repaired the damage, and then in 1953, was hit by a fire in the sanctuary.  Because of the age of the church building and the extensive damage from the fire, and a generous offer of property, the congregation voted to move to its current location in Greendale.  At the new site, ground was broken for the new building on April 10, 1955.  The first service was held Christmas Eve, 1956, and the Church was dedicated on Reformation Sunday, October 27, 1957.  Since that date, the church building has undergone several renovations, with the last being in 1966.  The pipe organ had an extensive overhaul and update with the number of pipes nearly doubled, three banks of keys on the keyboard.  Now, the organ’s quality of sound is outstanding!
